That type of Christianity which happens now to be in the vogue knows this Presence only in theory. At the heart of the Christian message is God Himself waiting for His redeemed children to push in to conscious awareness of His Presence. ![]() The Presence of God is the central fact of Christianity. Tozer characterizes modern evangelicalism as laying out the parts of the sacrifice on the altar and being “satisfied to count the stones and rearrange the pieces with never a care that there is not a sign of fire upon the top of lofty Carmel.” (p.9) Especially helpful are Tozer’s observations about the necessity for the believer to follow hard after God relationally and the nature of faith as “the gaze of a soul upon a saving God.” Nevertheless, many of the points that do come from Scripture are profound and rich, making the small amount of time required to read this book well worth it. Many of Tozer’s points in this book seem to come from his own speculation rather than from Scripture. ![]() 5/27/2023 0 Comments The ambergris trilogy![]() Ultimately, the fate of Ambergris comes to lie in the hands of John Finch, a beleaguered detective with a murder on to solve and too many loyalties for one man to bear. There are stories within stories, mystery, mayhem, and a dark history that threatens to consume the city itself as the gray caps, the mysterious and deadly mushroom people who once ruled Ambergris and have since been driven underground, now threaten to rise again. Ambergris bristles with intellectual fervor and religious rivalries it thrives on cultural upheaval, and its politics are never short on intrigue, conspiracy, and even terror. I really enjoyed the way Fanny found out about Jonas’ deceit. Everything really comes together and starts to build as the end of the series approaches. ![]() They're just too over-the-top.Ī Surrendered Heart is the culmination of the Broadmoor legacy. ![]() That goes for both Ellert and Uncle Jonas in this book. I understand the underlying message of the Christian author, but it's the way it was laid out was too unbelievable. I'm glad the creep ended up overboard, but I didn't think it was as plausible as it should've been. When her parents are proud of her decision and say she has maturity beyond her years, I just think she's playing the martyr and showing very little self worth. She was supposed to be level-headed and reasonable in all the books, but she lost all credibility in this one. She loathed the man and had no obligation to him except an agreement her father made, which she did not have to uphold (since she was legally and adult). As Ellert showed more and more of his truly awful character, Amanda's stubbornness in remaining with him made no sense. I found Amanda's fixation with saving face for her family really hard to believe. I enjoyed the first couple books in this series, but this one was too far-fetched for me. ![]() |
