In twenty-one accessible chapters that are both provocative and profound, Harari builds on the ideas explored in his previous books, untangling political, technological, social, and existential issues and offering advice on how to prepare for a very different future from the world we now live in: How can we retain freedom of choice when Big Data is watching us? What will the future workforce look like, and how should we ready ourselves for it? How should we deal with the threat of terrorism? Why is liberal democracy in crisis? As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive. Yuval Noah Harari's 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is a probing and visionary investigation into today's most urgent issues as we move into the uncharted territory of the future. How do computers and robots change the meaning of being human? How do we deal with the epidemic of fake news? Are nations and religions still relevant? What should we teach our children? Now, one of the most innovative thinkers on the planet turns to the present to make sense of today's most pressing issues.

In 2011, her “The Man Who Would Stop at Nothing Long-distance Motorcycling’s Endless Road” introduced me to the world of long-distance motorcycling and the Iron Butt Association. Melissa Pierson (left) and John Ryan help inspire an Iron Butt rider. Like many of us, I fell in love with Melissa Holbrook Pierson’s first book, “The Perfect Vehicle: What It Is About Motorcycles” and Moto Guzzis along the way. Innumerable thunder roads that wind through moonshine hills in Virginia and West Virginia and Kentucky and Tennessee and North Carolina. Sweepers north in the Shenandoah Valley on Route 42 in the footsteps of generals McDowell and McClellan and Jackson and Hunter and Breckinridge and Sheridan. I wander roads promising beauty and history and vistas and exhilaration. Most of my mototravels seek out the places I could go by car, but don’t. We don’t ponder the nature of pavement, but I do - or, at least that’s what I’m doing as I stand on the southbound lane of Interstate 81. We make these determinations in milliseconds. As riders, we’e always aware of road surfaces: Dry? Oily? Cracked? 5/30/2023 0 Comments She Who Waits by Daniel PolanskyThe one person who left him, broken and bitter, to become the man he is today. And behind them all waits the one person whose betrayal Warden never expected. A hospital full of lunatics, a conspiracy against the corrupt new king, and a ghetto full of thieves and murderers stand between him and his slim hope for the future. And behind them all waits the one person whose betrayal Warden never expected. But Warden must finally reckon with his terrible past if he can ever hope to escape it. Low Town is changing, faster than even he can control, and Warden knows that if he doesn't get out soon, he may never get out at all. But Warden's growing older, and the vultures are circling. Since hes also an addict, there isnt much left from his business, so every day. As a younger man, Warden carried out more than his fair share of terrible deeds, and never as many as when he worked for the Black House. Five years ago, Warden fell from grace and turned to a life of crime and drugs. The series tells the story of Polansky’s drug-addled and hard-bitten protagonist, The Warden of Low Town, a tough as nails crime lord who leans a lot closer to Heath Ledger’s Joker than Marlon. And Warden, long ago a respected agent in the formidable Black House, is now the most depraved Low Town denizen of them all. Low Town: the worst ghetto in the worst city in the Thirteen Lands. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Book review daddy long legsTour, a former singer and international model, tells stories in her own inimitable way. Tour explains this presence and style in a radio interview on our “East County Magazine Live!” radio show here. The author has a distinctive presence and unique style in her writing, which is readily apparent, from the colors and illustrations in her books to her humor that she projects through the various characters in her stories. It certainly helps that she has young children of her own. Having written a number of reviews of Tour’s children’s books, namely Mama’s Shoe and The Rainbow Animals, it is clear to me that she has a passion for writing and expressing it through stories that will resonate with young children. As a matter of fact, one of the characters in this fanciful book, “Jeanne on a Bike”, is actually inspired by one of her friends Jeanne (her daughter named her that). Octo(San Diego’s East County) - Anat Tour, East County (San Diego) resident and high school math teacher, has written another of her many children’s book which is inspired and sparked by her kids, friends, and animals she meets Dandy Daddy Long Legs. Facebook Journalism Project covid-19 reportingĭandy Daddy Long Legs, by Anat Tour (Anat Tour, San Diego, 2019). The story may be scandalous, but it’s also unacceptable, and thus undermines its motives before even circling the main subtext, i.e., Flynn’s fancy for girls who are barely, if ever, legal. So it’s hard to get on board with co-writers and co-directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland’s late period biopic of the long gone cinematic swashbuckler. Nowadays, someone like Flynn would be sitting in a jail cell somewhere, his penchant for young girls a guilt-producing given. You see, we are sitting in 2014, not 1950-something, and for the last 30 plus years, we’ve gone out of our way to put such slick, shifty predators behind bars. No matter the times or the temperament, no matter a mother who basically pimps her child out for a possibility at fame (and the accompanying fortune) or the studio system and media, which sheepishly look the other way, can a film like this work? The answer, once you’ve seen The Last of Robin Hood, is “No.” Can a serious movie be made about a May/December romance where one party is in his late ’40s and the other is only 15? Can the “he”, a former dashing matinee idol (Errol Flynn) who already escaped one accusation of statutory rape really be seen as sympathetic, or even socially acceptable, given his proclivities? Can the “she”, a teenager of suspect talents (Beverly Aadland) be anything other than a victim? I cannot wait to read more and I highly recommend you read this one too! This is a story of survival, true love and friendships that survive time!! Catherine Bilson has written a wonderful story with heart and strong emotions that drew me in from the first page. This book started off so sweet but there was evil lurking on the outskirts determined to have Marianne for himself. She vowed she would wait for him as he went off to war. There is no force on earth which will stop me coming to you, if you will but wait for me." Alexander's promise to her was a pledge and as she was his friend since childood he had always loved her.
